More nursing homes facing spot checks

The Federal Minister for Ageing, Christopher Pyne, thinks that random spot checks of nursing homes are the likely cause of more sanctions being imposed.

A fifth South Australian aged care home has been sanctioned by federal authorities for failing to meet all 44 national aged care standards.

Mr Pyne says not all the sanctions in the past year have been due to any serious lapse in the care of residents.

But he says, with 290 aged care facilities in SA, it is clear that most homes are up to standard.

"The increase in unannounced visits has found a few homes that are not fulfilling the 44 standards," he said.

"It's probably, hopefully, it's just a blip that will settle down from now on."
